Basic Training for Oil and Chemical Tanker Cargo Operations

Course Description

This course provides training for officers and ratings. It comprises a basic training programme appropriate to their duties, including oil and chemical tanker safety, fire safety measures and systems, pollution prevention, operational practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations. The course takes full account of section A-V/1-1 of the STCW Code adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers as amended, including the Manila amendments 2010. Course content in accordance to the Model course 1.01 and STCW 2010 Code A-V/1-1-1Scope.
 

Course Goal

To enhance the participants’ knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to understand and gain proficiency required for performing duties and carrying the responsibility prescribed by Regulation V/1-1-1 of International Convention STCW and standard A-V/1-1-1 of STCW Code.
 

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Be familiar with types of oil and chemical tankers.
  • Understand general arrangement and construction of oil and chemical tankers.
  • Understand basic knowledge of cargo operations.
  • Determine physical properties of oil and chemicals.
  • Understand tanker safety culture and safety management.
  • Take precautions to prevent hazards associated with tanker operations.
  • Apply basic knowledge of hazard controls.
  • Understand information on a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS).
  • Apply occupational health and safety precautions and measures.
  • Carry out fire-fighting operations.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Take precautions to prevent pollution of the environment from the release of oil or chemicals.
