Course Description

The Environment and Sustainable Development Course is designed to enhance students’ understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promote their role in creating a more sustainable future. Through this course, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the SDGs, including their goals, targets, and relevance to promoting sustainability.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including eradicating poverty and hunger, promoting good health and well-being, reducing inequalities, ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, promoting sustainable energy, supporting inclusive education and decent work, and creating resilient infrastructure. Students will also learn about best practices for implementing the SDGs at the individual, local, national, and international levels and how to monitor, evaluate, and report on progress towards achieving the SDGs.
The course emphasizes the importance of collaboration between all society partners and stakeholders to create a world of peace and justice for all. It also introduces the concept of radical transformation and thinking beyond sustainability to achieve the SDGs.
By the end of the course, students will have a deep understanding of the SDGs and their importance in promoting sustainable development. They will be equipped with practical solutions for implementation and progress tracking, and will have the tools to become active agents of change in promoting sustainability for all.

Course Objectives

By the end of this course, participant will be able to:

  • Learn about the role of the United Nations, the 2030 Agenda, and other international agreements (e.g., the Paris agreement and post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework).
  • Gain an overview of the 17 SDGs and their targets, and why they matter.
  • Learn about pathways for solutions and how students can become active agents of change.
  • Learn about how governments, businesses, and civil societies can also be active participants in the implementation of the SDGs.
  • Learn about how countries make decisions on their selection of SDGs and targets they want to focus on and how they establish indicators of progress.
  • Learn about how the SDGs are monitored, tracked, and reported.
  • Learn about the role of thinking beyond sustainability to the transformations necessary to meet and exceed the 2030 Agenda.
